News - Mandela Day 2011

July 2011

On the 18 July 2011 (and for two days leading up to it), Ekurhuleni East College took 400 members of its staff (management and lecturers), supporting staff and students and spent whole days at the Far East Rand Hospital, fixing up and cleaning the maternity section and other areas of the hospital. The whole project took 3 days to complete.

  • Day 1 - 15 July 2011: Friday was spent assessing areas to be fixed and enhanced.
  • Day 2 - 16 July 2011: Saturday was spent scraping and painting, sketching pictures on the walls, etc. Some did this on Sunday too!
  • Day 3 - 18 July 2011: Mandela Day was spent cleaning the entrance, scrubbing walls and elevators, cleaning windows and finishing the paintings.

Pictures of some of the results of the event are shown below.

  • We also donated two framed photographs of former President Mandela.
  • Four fruit hampers were donated to the mothers of babies born during our time there.
  • A large hamper was donated to a Granny who shared a birthday Mr. Mandela, and was also turning 93!
